Coffee Does a Body Good

Filed under: coffee — sharpglass @ 9:22 pm

Hi everyone.  My name is Matt, and I’m a coffee snob.  At least that is what my wife would have me tell you.  I just think I really love coffee.  I’m not one of those people who refuses to touch anything that wasn’t small batch roasted, or demand to know whether the coffee I’m getting ready to drink came from Papa New Guinea or Ethiopia.  Now given, if I’m offered Maxwell House or a coffee that was roasted 1 week ago, I’m going to choose the fresh stuff.   I even roast my own beans at home.  But when I run out of coffee at home, I’ll stop at Quick Trip, or McDonald’s (Starbucks is a ripoff) and I’m perfectly happy.  I know what good coffee tastes like, but I can’t tell you that coffee from one country or plantation has “hints of cedar and blackberry” while this other one has “buttery overtones and a smoky finish.”  I either like it, or I don’t.  Not too sceintific.  I own quite a collection of coffee brewing devices, and each have their pluses and minuses.  The drip machine does not brew hot enough, but it’s the fastest.  The French Press is slow and the quantity is small, but the flavor is great, and you can control the temperature.  The Chemex pot is slow and messy, but temp. control and flavor are the best.   But now we have a new entry into the coffee machine smackdown…..enter the Keurig B40.

I picked up this little beauty at Target last night, and I’m already sold.  It came with a variety pack of coffee, and this will definitely be my new weekday morning coffee brewer of choice.  Let me tell you how this morning went…wake up, walk to kitchen, insert coffee “k cup”, push button…wait 40 seconds….hot, tasty, organic coffee is ready for me.  Less than one minute after that, a cup of hazelnut coffee for my wife.   Amazing!!   There is a huge variety of “k cups” from coffee companies such as Green Mountain Coffee, Tully’s, Newman’s Own, Gloria Jeans, and Coffee People.  Whatever your taste, they will probably have it.  Sumatra, Kenya, Columbia, Kona, dark roast, light roast, organic, fair trade, flavored….on and on.  They even have about 20 different kinds of tea.  The selection is much better than any of the other single-serve brewers, and was the deciding factor between this and the Tassimo.   Amazon has the best prices on the coffee, and it works out to about $0.40 per cup.  I have also ordered a reusable k cup which allows you to use your own coffee instead of buying the pre-packaged k cups.  This not only saves money, but will allow me to still use my fresh roasted coffee, but with a new found speed and ease.
